Legal Obligations

While it isn't illegal to send advertising mail to individuals listed on the MPS Register, the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 clearly stipulate that organisations should refrain from repeatedly contacting someone who has explicitly requested not to be contacted.

If the MPS were to become a formal legal standard, all organisations would then be legally obligated to screen their mailing lists against the MPS Register to ensure compliance. Having an MPS licence demonstrates that your business is committed to responsible practices and respects consumer preferences.

It is advisable and good practice for all mailers to screen their non-customer mailing lists against the Mailing Preference File to prevent unwanted contacts and uphold ethical marketing standards.
