Provide the address you want to register and ensure that all registration details are confirmed. For instance, if you don't want to receive unsolicited advertising addressed to you, a previous resident, or someone who is deceased, please specify that for each relevant address.

What happens if my address details change?

If you move home and do not wish to receive unsolicited direct mailings at your new home, you will need to register your name and your new address with the MPS. You can also register your name at a previous address or the previous occupant of your new home. It's not necessary to remove your existing registration, as the registration continues to prevent unsolicited mailings.

How do I deregister my name and address from the MPS?

If you have registered your name and address with the MPS but are now happy to receive unsolicited sales and marketing correspondence, we can remove your details from the service. Please email your request to mps@dma.org.uk and we will action this ASAP.

Do I need to re-register on the MPS?

You do not need to re-register on the MPS. Once you have registered, your details will remain on the service until you inform us otherwise.

Can I register other members in my household?

No, unless you have explicit consent from the individual. MPS registrations need to be made on an individual basis, where consent has been given. To reduce unsolicited personally addressed mailings, each individual must register with MPS. Registration isn't based on a household but on each individual's name and surname.

How long does it take for my MPS registration to take effect?

Your name and address will be added to the register immediately but it can take 2-3 months for the Service to have full effect. This is because a mailing campaign can take several months to prepare.

About MPS and your data

Has MPS shared my details with third parties for marketing purposes?

No, absolutely not. We are not a mailing house and we do not send out unsolicited mailings. The only time we would pass on details would be for the purpose of suppression, so direct mailers know whom not to mail.

What MPS does and does not reduce

Does MPS reduce mailings addressed to the occupier/homeowner?

No. MPS is unable to reduce mailings addressed to either the Occupier or Homeowner. The service works by companies "cleansing" their mailing lists by title, forename, surname, and full address levels. If you are receiving mailings addressed to the occupier or homeowner, you should contact the company that sent the mailing directly and ask to be removed from their delivery lists.

Does MPS stop mailings addressed to a business name?

No, MPS is for UK residential addresses only. If you are receiving mailings addressed to a business name (this includes sole trader, partnership, limited company or publicly limited company), you should contact the sender directly and ask to be removed from its mailing list.

Does registering on MPS stop all unsolicited mail?

You may receive mailings from companies with whom you have an existing relationship. If you wish to stop receiving these mailings, you can notify the companies directly. It's important to note that MPS cannot prevent mail such as letters from friends and family, bills, bank statements, or mail addressed to 'The Occupier' or 'The Homeowner'.

Complaints and enforcement

I’m already registered with MPS, but I still continue to receive sales and marketing mailings.

The MPS will prevent the receipt of unsolicited direct mailings sent from member companies of the Data & Marketing Association (DMA) and we will take steps to prevent the receipt of unsolicited direct mailings from companies that are non-DMA members.

If, after 3 months, you are still receiving this type of correspondence at the address you have registered with MPS, you can take advantage of our free complaint handling service. Remember, registering with MPS will not stop mail from companies that you are a customer of, nor if you have requested their mailings.

Please click on the complaints option on the above menu for further details.

I submitted a complaint to MPS and want to know what action has been taken.

All complaints received will be acknowledged and processed by our complaints team. We will write to the company involved, asking for an explanation of why they have sent unsolicited mailings to an MPS-registered address and ask that they remove the address from their mailing lists.

If we do not receive a response from an organisation we are investigating, or if we receive an unsatisfactory response, we will pass these complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), which can issue sanctions against such companies. In this case, the ASA will make contact with the complainants themselves. The ASA's details can be found on the Consumer Protection option on the above menu.
